Artist Mark Sgarbossa brings to life the Celtics’ 1986 title in this screen-print-style art piece. The artwork vibrantly captures the legendary starting five of Bird, McHale, Johnson, Ainge, and Parish and incorporates the box scores from all six games of the Finals. The 1985-86 Celtics didn’t get the NBA Finals rematch they longed for. They would’ve done anything in their power to have another crack at the Lakers, but Houston threw a monkey wrench into that plan. Perhaps the young Rockets didn’t know exactly what they were getting themselves into. Awaiting them in the Finals was a savvy and hungry Boston team featuring one of the mightiest front lines in the history of roundball. Larry Bird manned the small forward spot, while Kevin McHale anchored the power forward position. In the middle stood “The Chief,” Robert Parish. The backcourt featured Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge. Fresh off a 67-15 season, the Celtics overwhelmed Houston’s “Twin Towers” — Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson — and defused the Rockets in six games. “Larry Legend” emerged as the Finals MVP, and Boston started clearing space in the rafters for banner No. 16.

About the Artist

San Diego based artist Mark Sgarbossa’s work spans a broad range of styles, which allows him to move seamlessly between projects from designing skateboards for Tony Hawk to gig posters for De La Soul, to tour merchandise for Ted Nugent.  An accomplished rock poster artist, Sgarbossa’s work has featured such acts as Helmet, Franz Ferdinand, Avenged Sevenfold, and the late Johnny Cash.
