The state of New York already held Carmelo Anthony in the highest regard thanks to his carrying Syracuse to a national championship as the Most Outstanding Player of the 2003 NCAA tournament. If only some day “Melo” could come back to the region, become a Knick and maybe even lead Madison Square Garden’s resident team to NBA championship glory. New York supporters wished it, and it became true on Feb. 22, 2011 when the Knicks snatched one of the NBA’s most lethal scorers in a blockbuster trade with Denver. Anthony looked even sharper than the locals could’ve imagined when he added a Knicks jersey to his trademark sleeves and headband. Jab-stepping and faking his opponents, Anthony hits buckets in bunches and has finished among the league’s top-10 scorers seven times in his career. That’s all fine and dandy, but what he really wants is that huge piece of cloth to hang up in the Knicks’ rafters.
