Artist Mark Sgarbossa brings to life the Knicks’ first NBA title in this vibrant screen-print-style art piece. The artwork incorporates images of Knicks icons Walt Frazier and Willis Reed along with the box scores from their dramatic victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. Alicia Keys wasn’t necessarily talking about the 1969-70 Knicks on her hit record “Empire State of Mind,” but she might as well have been. “Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can’t do, now you’re in New York.” Back in the Big Apple for Game 7 of a cracker of an NBA Finals duel with the Lakers, the entire town held its collective breath assuming Willis Reed, the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, was out of commission with a thigh injury. The Knicks had another future Hall of Famer in Walt Frazier, though, so there was still hope. When Reed hobbled out of the Madison Square Garden tunnel in uniform, he sent shivers down the spine of every hoops fan watching. Feeling like they could pull off the improbable, an inspired New York squad outlasted Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain and the rest of L.A., 113-99, for the first NBA championship in team history.

About the Artist

San Diego based artist Mark Sgarbossa’s work spans a broad range of styles, which allows him to move seamlessly between projects from designing skateboards for Tony Hawk to gig posters for De La Soul, to tour merchandise for Ted Nugent.  An accomplished rock poster artist, Sgarbossa’s work has featured such acts as Helmet, Franz Ferdinand, Avenged Sevenfold, and the late Johnny Cash.
